Superfood Sunday: Spirulina

And we’re back for another installment of Superfood Sunday and today we talk about Spirulina.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that’s incredibly nutrient rich. What once was used billions of years ago as nourishment for Aztecs is now called a superfood and has a number of benefits that affect the human body and mind.

Spirulina is a good supplement for everybody, but it greatly benefits vegetarians and vegans. “It is an excellent source of iron, vitamin B12 and protein, all of which are harder to get from a diet without animal products,” says Dr. Libby. Not only that, but also being rich in vitamin B6 and iron it supports a healthy brain and cognitive function. “It also has high amounts of magnesium which is a common deficiency in the western diet, so could help improve sleep and the ability to deal with stress.”

You can add a teaspoon of Spirulina to a glass of water with lemon or if you’re blending a smoothie at home why not try Libby’s recommended Green Smoothie below? You can even whip up some Organic Burst o-so-healthy Spirulina Truffles that will even help you fight your 3pm sugar craving. And after a sweaty Barre workout at Frame, make sure to traipse over to the Fuel Your Frame smoothie bar at both Queen’s Park and Shoreditch and they’ll put a spoonful of superfood Spirulina into your smoothie!

Spirulina supports the immune system and even contributes to a healthy heart. But how much would you have to take to gain all the benefits? While it is a nutritional powerhouse it is an acquired taste and consuming in quantities high enough to reap this benefits is difficult for most people”, says Dr. Libby. Start off with a teaspoon of Spirulina every day and see if it makes a difference to your health and well-being. If you’re thinking about adding Spirulina into your diet, here’s a Green Smoothie recipe from Libby!
